Trojans sweep rival Hornets
The only thing that slowed down the Parkland swim teams last weekend was a bit of winter weather that delayed the Trojans’ sweep of Emmaus in the annual rivalry meet with the Hornets.
A few inches of snow last Friday afternoon pushed the meet to Saturday morning, when Parkland was able to travel down Cedar Crest Boulevard to sweep Emmaus. The Trojans won the girls meet 104-82 and took the boys meet 103-83.
“I am super proud of them,” said Parkland head coach Allie McPeek after the meet. “It was a bit of a disappointment that we couldn’t swim [Friday]. They’ve been working really hard over the last month and they were hungry and ready to swim today.”
The weather delay might have caused a bit of uncertainty, but it didn’t deter the defending district champs.
“We were a little nervous,” said Parkland senior Doug Bell of the weather delay. “We had a Google meet. We got together. We did stuff as a team. Coach Allie [McPeek] reassured us that we’re in this together and we’re still going to be the same swimmers that we are today.”
Parkland’s girls team was led by junior Milla Hahn and sophomore Sydney LaBaugh, who won two individual events each and were both part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team.
The Trojans took a big lead in team points early on when Hahn, LaBaugh, Baylee Kish and Kelsey McPeek took first place in the medley relay and another Parkland team finished third.
LaBaugh earned the first of her two wins in the meet’s first individual event, swimming the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.26. Her next win came in record-setting fashion as she broke the Emmaus pool record with a time of 56.31 in backstroke.
“Breaking the record was awesome,” LaBaugh said. “I didn’t look at the record board before I swam it. After I realized and it was a really good feeling.”
Hahn helped extend Parkland’s lead with a win in the second individual event. She finished the 200-yard individual medley in 2:09.79. She also touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly in 58.01.
The Trojans won seven of the meet’s nine individual events as Kenzi Schultz (500 free) and McPeek (100 breaststroke) won swimming races and Sam Schultz took the diving even with teammates Johanna Cook and Addison Dietrich in second and third place.
The Parkland girls team improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in East Penn Conference competition this season. The Trojans are four-time defending district champs and have won the past five league girls titles.
Parkland’s boys team is also a defending league and district champ after last season when the Trojans ended a long Emmaus run of boys district championships.
While last season marked Parkland’s first district title since 2007 and first league crown since 2004, this year’s team has plans to repeat last year’s postseason performance.
Saturday showed that the team is on track to accomplish those goals.
The Trojans won four individual events to the Hornet’s five, but they won two of the three relays and used their depth to keep a comfortable lead over the Hornets.
“I’m really happy,” said Bell. “Because we have a great group of guys and we have a great group moving forward and they’re going to have a great next few years. This is the most exciting meet there is besides districts. I’m stoked and I get those guys stoked and they’re all just excited for this meet.
“I’m super proud. We train so hard and clearly we can show it.”
Bell anchored the 200 medley relay team that took first place, with teammates Gabe Krizel, Ethan Coleman and Thomas Price rounding out the foursome.
Sophomore Dominic Faenza started the individual events with a Parkland win in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.53. The Trojans also took third and fourth place in that event.
Faenza went on to also take first place in the 500 freestyle (4:41.29), while also helping the 200-yard freestyle relay team to first place with teammates Jacob Piccini, Eric Friday and Bell.
Bradley Kunz took the diving event for Parkland with a score of 251.25 and Coleman won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.61.
While Emmaus took five individual boys events, Parkland came away with more points in each of them as four of those Hornet wins saw three Trojans finish in the top five. Similarly, in the one relay that Emmaus won, Parkland teams took second and third place to stay in front on the scoreboard.
“When we write our line ups, that’s how we write them,” said Allie McPeek. “We make sure we are preparing for everything whether we finish first or not. Second, third, fourth fifth, they all score. They all matter. We always want to get in the top five.”
The Parkland boys team also improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in EPC meets.
Three other EPC teams remain unbeaten this season as Easton, Nazareth and Northampton are all unbeaten in both girls and boys league dual meets.
The Trojans host Northampton on Thursday, Jan. 9 before the Blue Eagles visit the PHS Natatorium on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Easton is not on Parkland’s regular season schedule.
