PHS stays unbeaten in league play
Within the last week, the Parkland High School girls basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season last week, but the Trojans also remained undefeated in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference competition.
After a 51-16 win over Whitehall last Tuesday night, Dec. 10, in the home opener, Parkland took down Pocono Mountain West 42-9 this past Friday night. But the next day, Parkland was defeated for the first time this season, 46-42, in a nonconference game at Wyomissing. The Trojans responded quickly, though, and beat Northampton 37-26 Monday night at home.
In the win over the Panthers, the Parkland defense held them to just one point in the first quarter and went on top 28-7 at halftime. The game was put out of reach in the third quarter when the Trojans outscored PMW 10-2 to go up 38-9. Aneri McGalla led the offense with a game-high 17 points.
Against the Spartans, Parkland jumped out on top early and led 19-9 after the opening quarter, but Wyomissing climbed back into the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Trojans 12-5 and trailed by just three (24-21) at halftime. Parkland was held to just three points in the third quarter and the Spartans scored 16 to take a 37-27 advantage and then held on in the fourth quarter. Delaney Chilcote tallied a team-best 17 points.
In the victory over the Kids, the Trojans used a strong third quarter, outscoring Northampton 13-3 to push a 16-15 halftime lead to 29-18 after three. The teams both scored eight points in the fourth. Isabella Hallal totaled a team-high 11 points and Chilcote contributed 10. McGalla added seven points.
Parkland (5-1 overall, 5-0 EPC) has its final conference game of the calendar year this Friday night as it welcomes Central Catholic to Parkland High School. Less than 24 hours later, the Trojans will play William Penn Charter in the Keystone Classic on Saturday afternoon. Next Friday and Saturday, Parkland will compete in the Wilson West Lawn Christmas Tournament.
