Children from first through fifth grade are invited to participate in the Parkland Garden Club’s annual drawing contest featuring conservation icons Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl.
The Parkland School District has been participating in the contest for many years.
Elementary art teachers at each school have the information on the poster contest.
All posters need to be returned to the art teacher by Jan. 13, 2025.
Smokey Bear says,
“Only you can prevent wildfires!”
He teaches children and adults to be careful with campfires, burning yard waste and matches.

Woodsy Owl is America’s icon for the conservation of the environment.
“Lend a hand — care for the land!” is his slogan. He challenges children to “Lend a hand, care for the land!” and to take an active role in caring for the land through recycling, reusing, and reducing waste; gardening, planting and caring for trees; using resources wisely; and not littering.

Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl are official icons protected by law.
Therefore their clothing needs to be accurate, and the appropriate mottos must be used. The list of rules is available from the elementary art teachers.
