Smaller wrestling team looks to compete
The Salisbury wrestling program is ready to begin another season in 2024-25. The Falcons had nine wrestlers competing at the District 11 tournament last year, which is up from previous seasons and the most the Falcons sent to the postseason in over a decade.
Some of that was because Salisbury had a co-op with Central Catholic and rostered a few Vikings on last year’s Falcon wrestling team. This year the team will be pure Salisbury.
“I’m thrilled about the talent and dedication on our team this year,” said head coach Rob Fiedler. “Although our numbers are down following the end of the co-op with Central, the quality of our wrestlers more than makes up for it. We have a group of highly motivated individuals who have been working hard in the offseason and are ready to compete for placements as the season progresses. It’s an exciting opportunity to focus on their growth and see how far their talent and effort can take them.”
Junior Sam Krauss had the highest finish at districts last year, placing sixth at 285 pounds. He medaled, but fell just one place shy of qualifying for regionals. Others in the expected lineup include freshman Jacob Spinner at 114, freshman Jarrod Blunt at 133, sophomore Michael Segata at 145, senior Nathan Tone at 152, junior Jordan Tocci at 160 and senior Jimnino Supapo at 215.
“We have several wrestlers I expect to have standout seasons,” Fiedler said. “Senior Nathaniel Tone is poised for success after an 18-13 season and an impressive offseason of preparation. His growth and work ethic have been outstanding, and I anticipate big things from him. Junior heavyweight Sam Krauss is another top performer, coming off a 29-win season and a 6th-place finish at districts. He has the drive and skill to take his success even further this year. Freshman Jarrod Blunt is an exciting addition to the lineup after earning second place at junior high districts last year. Despite his youth, his talent and potential make him a wrestler to watch.”
Salisbury opens its regular season on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Jim Thorpe. The home opener is set for the next night against Wilson. Fiedler has his sights set on having a successful season with his group.
“Our primary focus this season will be on individual success,” Fiedler. “With only seven of 13 weight classes filled, it will be challenging to win dual meets against teams with full lineups. However, our wrestlers are determined to fight hard in every match, and I expect them to make a strong impression regardless of the scoreboard.
“I’m aiming for at least five of our seven wrestlers to achieve 20-plus wins this season. In terms of postseason goals, I’d love to see three of our wrestlers place at districts, with at least two advancing to regionals and pushing for a chance to qualify for states. While the odds may be against us in some ways, I firmly believe our team will rise to the challenge and deliver some incredible performances this year.”
