Salisbury wins three in a row
After an opening-day loss, the Salisbury boys basketball team has won three straight games.
Over the past week, the Falcons downed Lehigh Valley Charter Academy in a nonleague game and then returned to their Colonial League schedule with a 46-38 win over Palisades Monday night at home.
Against the Jaguars (1-2), Salisbury opened a 23-7 lead in the first quarter and finished with a 54-22 win.
Falcon players hit four three-pointers in the first quarter and nine overall in the game with Bryan Gonzalez leading the way with four from outside the arc. A pair of juniors in Gonzalez and Steven Lozada led the team in scoring as Gonzalez finished with 14 and Lozada scored 11 for Salisbury (3-1 overall, 2-0 Colonial).
To balance the scoring, Drew Petrie had nine points and Josh Holler finished the night with eight.
Monday night had the Falcons back into their Colonial League schedule as they battled Palisades (0-1, 0-1).
The Pirates held a 14-10 lead after the first quarter and stretched it to a 25-20 edge at halftime. The second half saw the Falcons cut the Palisades lead down to three and then not only tied the game, but pulled away in the final quarter for the 46-38 victory.
The Pirates held Gonzalez to just three points, but Petrie (16) and Lozada (12) combined for 28 points in the game to lead Salisbury in scoring.
The Falcons have averaged just under 51 points per game through their first four games this season, not bad for a team that lost four starters from last season. The returning players got a good amount of playing time at the varsity level last season and are helping out in the early going.
“We played a number of sophomores last year, including Bryan Gonzalez, Steven Lozada and Drew Petrie and that varsity experience made them ready to step up this year,” said coach Jason Weaver.
Over the next week, Salisbury plays at Jim Thorpe (1-3, 1-2) and Bangor (2-1, 2-0) and hosts Lehighton (4-1, 2-1).
