Laky heads into first season at the helm of girls team
Jason Laky has hung around his alma mater and given back as a junior varsity coach in both baseball and boys basketball. He has also served as the Salisbury Legion baseball coach.
This year Laky takes on a new role as the head coach of the girls basketball team after Paul Ziegenfuss resigned after two seasons.
Laky is coming in with his eyes wide open and realizes that he is taking over a team that has struggled, winning just three games last season. One issue that has plagued the program has been low turnout by potential players and that problem has already emerged.
This year, he has 11 players who will all be on both the varsity and JV rosters for the team as he looks to turn the program around.
A 1992 Salisbury graduate, Laky played baseball, basketball, and ran cross country during a stellar high school athletic career.
Last season, the Falcons were in a division that sent four teams – Catasauqua, Northern Lehigh, Northwestern Lehigh and Palmerton – to the league playoffs.
With the addition of Lehighton and Jim Thorpe to the Colonial League, there are now three divisions instead of two with the Lady Falcons in the newly created South Division with Catasauqua, Palisades, Saucon Valley, and Southern Lehigh.
The Rough Riders, who went 10-7 in league play last season, are the only team in the new division to have finished last season with a winning league record. The remaining three teams finished with an overall record of 13-40, giving the Falcons a slightly easier league schedule. There are also two additional playoff spots in the league playoffs this season.
Two of the top three scorers from last year’s team – Kendra Morgan (11.1 PPG) and Bella Nimeh (2.7 PPG) - are back and give Laky a pair of players who saw plenty of productive minutes on the court for Salisbury.
The Falcons open the season with three straight road games at Pen Argyl, Lehigh Valley Charter Academy, and Palisades. Their home opener is scheduled for December 12 against Jim Thorpe.
