King helps Hornet boys swim team take second place
Brady King had quite at last week’s quad meet at State College.
The Emmaus senior picked up three top-five finishes and captured a fourth as a member of the 400-yard freestyle team as the Hornets battled North Allegheny, Mercersburg and State College in their first quad meet of the season.
King finished third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.38, just under three seconds behind the top time in the event which belonged to Mercersburg’s Tom Cechini.
King captured fourth-place finishes in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke for Emmaus and teamed with Griffin Messenlehner, Reid Lovett and Carson Mosel to earn another fourth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Lovett picked up the highest individual finish of the day when he placed second in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:53.52 for the Hornets with Cechini again gaining the top spot for Mercersburg in the event.
With King and Lovett both finishing in the top five of the 500 freestyle, the outlook is good for Emmaus in distance swims this season.
Another senior, Griffin Messenlehner, finished third in a hotly contested 100-yard backstroke where the top three finishers were all within .69 of each other. Mercersburg’s Jaden Kwon won the event with a time of 51.17, North Allegheny’s Gus Miller 51.73 took second with Messenlehner just off the pace with a time of 51.86 for Emmaus.
Julian Vlaeminck finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle. Like the 100 backstroke event, the 50 freestyle came down to the wire with the top five swimmers all finishing within 1.10 of each other.
Vlaeminck’s time of 22.37 was just 00.92 off the pace set by North Allegheny’s Grant Regule, who turned in the top time of 21.45.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team finished fourth in their event. Reid Lovett teamed with his brother Graham Lovett, Vlaeminck, and sophomore Matt Sirignano for a time of 1:32.70.
In the team competition, Emmaus finished second with 575 points. North Allegheny won the event with 634.5 points, Mercersburg was third with 423.5 and State College was fourth with 379 points.
Emmaus returns to dual meets against EPC opponents Allentown Central Catholic and Pocono Mountain East over the next week.
