The Northampton girls wrestling team delivered new head coach Joe Tocci his first dual meet win by taking 3 of 5 contested bouts and getting 7 forfeits to down Bethlehem Catholic 60-15 last Wednesday.

Tocci gave his impressions of his team’s second outing of the year, “They weren’t as nervous as they were against Parkland. I think there was a lot of pressure off because of the forfeits. The match was kind of out of reach before it started, so I told them not to worry about the team score, just go out and do your best and worry about your match. I’m very pleased with them.”

Freshman Madison Bara got the night off to a fast start for the K-Kids, piling up 11 first period points before decking Andreie Dias early in the second period. It was her second pin in as many varsity matches after opening the season with one against Parkland.

Bara spoke about getting her start in the sport. “I wanted to do it ever since sixth grade, mostly because of my brother, he does wrestling. He kind of inspired me. He teaches me a lot of stuff.” “I’ve learned that you have to be the aggressor and that helps you win. I love it,” She concluded.

Gabby Chevere, a returning junior from the inaugural girls squad, made quick work of Sophia Antonelli with a fall in 27 seconds.

In the final contested bout of the night, sophomore Allison Rounsaville, another returnee, scored her first non-forfeit wrestling win with a pin against Sophia Papay.

Rounsaville reacted to the win, “Knowing how hard I worked in the offseason and how hard I work in the room, I feel like it’s my time and I really deserve this. I was wrestling up two weight classes from where I normally am. I was scared but I won. I’m excited.”

She described her improvement from her first season, “Last year, I lost every single match by pin. Last year I thought that everybody at every school was new and it was going to be easy. It was hard to stick with it last season. Coming to practice and being with my teammates helped me to get through some other things I was going through.”

Over the weekend, the team competed in the Gettysburg duals going 5-1 with only a loss to the host school in the final round.
