Falcon girls basketball picks up first win of season

The Salisbury girls basketball turned in a pair of good outings over the past week. Against Lehigh Valley Charter Academy, the Lady Falcons (1-2 overall, 1-1 Colonial) trailed by just two at halftime before struggling down the stretch and falling to the Jaguars 49-38 last Thursday.

Undaunted by the loss, Salisbury downed Palisades 39-32 Monday night for its first win of the season.

Against Lehigh Valley Charter (2-1), Salisbury’s Roxana Cardenas led her team with 12 points, including three three-point shots.

Trailing 21-19 at the half, the Falcon offense was held to just seven third-quarter points as the Jaguars started to open a comfortable lead. Anndy Little and Jayleigh Morales-Gillmeyer both scored a team high 14 points for Lehigh Valley Charter.

Salisbury opened this week by sending the Pirates to their third straight loss of the season.

Sophia Gunning had the hot hand for Salisbury as she scored 11 first-half points, including nine points in the opening quarter, on her way to a game-high 16-point performance. The Falcons got seven points from Kendra Morgan in the win over Palisades.

The emergence of Cardenas and Gunning, who are both freshmen, has been an early season bright spot for a team that carries just one senior and two juniors on its roster. The team also has four sophomores and four freshmen on the roster for this season.

First-year coach Jason Laky is using the youth of his team to work on stressing fundamentals and taking what it does in practice into games.

“My staff and I have practically started all over building from the ground up and getting back to the basic fundamentals,” said Laky. “I know that the team has been working hard and our hope is that with each game we can continue to build their confidence and put them in the best possible position to win basketball games.

“We believe in our kids and we feel fortunate to be able to coach them every day and hope it leads to success.”

Over the next week, the Falcons will play the two new Colonial League teams as they host Jim Thorpe (0-3, 0-3) and then travel to play Lehighton (0-3, 0-3). Another home game follows that as the Bangor Slaters (2-2, 2-1) visit Salisbury.
