Emmaus wins first three games
The Emmaus High School girls basketball team has had a fast start to the 2024-25 season under first-year head coach Avon Mack.
The Green Hornets have won three of their first four games overall and the first two Eastern Pennsylvania Conference games.
Emmaus went on the road for its first three games and defeated Wilson 55-48 in a nonconference game on November 30.
The Hornets took down Central Catholic 51-36 two nights later and then got the better of Nazareth 56-50 last Thursday night. They fell for the first time in the home opener against Hazleton, 82-44, last Saturday.
In the win over the Bulldogs, Emmaus led by just one (8-7) after the opening quarter, but got a little bit more of a cushion in the second quarter and led 26-22 at halftime. The Hornets outscored them by three again in the third quarter to finish out the game.
Sophomore Kayla Snyder tallied 19 points and made her team’s only two 3-pointers. Junior Gabby DeVita finished in double figures with 14 points and both seniors Sylvia Sokolofski and Cassie Doemling recorded six points.
In the victory against the Vikettes, Emmaus outscored them each quarter and never trailed.
Doemling led all scorers with a game-high 13 points. Junior Olive Whitney and Snyder also finished with double digits in scoring with 12 points each, combining for six 3-pointers. DeVita added nine points. The Hornets shot 80 percent from the floor.
It was a different situation against the Blue Eagles as Emmaus trailed at halftime, 31-24. The second half rally gave the Hornets their first win over Nazareth in the past 16 meetings between the two teams.
Emmaus outscored the hosts 32-19 in the second half. Snyder finished with 14 points, DeVita contributed 13 points and Doemling had nine.
Emmaus suffered its first loss of the season against the Cougars as they jumped out in front 19-11 after the first quarter and then outscored the Hornets 42-14 in the second half. DeVita tallied a team-high 13 points and Whitney added eight.
Emmaus has its first home conference games this week. The Hornets hosted Allen this past Tuesday night and welcome East Stroudsburg North on Friday night.
