LHS girls look to take the next step

Liberty’s girls basketball team have their eyes on the (district) prize, having gotten close in recent years under Hurricane head coach Jarrett Carnes.

“We have players on this team that have reached back-to-back district semifinals and are looking to get over the hump,” Carnes said.

This season’s key returners include Ava Kopetskie, Anijah Davis, Shawna Beatty, and Tula Sobrinski. Also key will be freshman Kendall Medina.

The Hurricanes will have voted on captains past Press deadlines, but Carnes’s expectations are already outlined.

“Keeping the team together through the highs and lows and leading the group day in and day out will be expected of our new captains,” he said.

Liberty will be challenged in filling the shoes of seven graduates who were major contributors for the past two seasons.

“Girls are already stepping up and excited about what’s in store for this year,” said Carnes. “Our group this year will look to challenge teams with our athleticism, quickness, and defense mixed with some experience.”

Coach Carnes will be assisted by Kye Adams, Sherri McDonald, and Maddie Capuano.

Liberty’s conference opener will have been be a city rivalry game against Bethlehem Catholic on Dec. 2 at Becahi.
