LHS aims to be force in girls wrestling
Liberty had themselves an impressive postseason run a year ago in girls’ wrestling. Now, they want even more this winter.
Head coach Brian Burzynski heads the program for the second year after a 5-1 campaign that saw three wrestlers qualify for the PIAA tournament a year ago.
“We’re gearing up for another strong season, aiming to build on last year’s record and district runner-up finish,” Burzynski said. “With a dedicated group of returning athletes and promising new talent, the team is focused on the individual improvement of all wrestlers. The coaching staff is optimistic about the season ahead, setting sights on not only defending their district standing but also breaking into the top 10 in the state. With a blend of experience, determination, and hard work, the girls are poised to make a significant impact on the mat this year.”
With 22 girls in the program some of the top names include PIAA qualifiers Doniya Anwari (130, Sr.), Addyson Munro (235, Sr.) and Gracie Haflich (170, Sr.).
Haflich took seventh last season and was a district and regional champion.
Senior Luisyana Ortiz (130) is a USA Wrestling Freestyle PA National Team Member and junior
Ellie Rumbalski (190) took third at districts last year and qualified for regionals.
Other returning wrestlers include juniors Kierha Castillo (130), Leena Cruz (155), Destiny Rios (148) and Jeniya Zayas (235). Sophomores Eva Trujillo (124), Sadie Sedlock (118), Kaylee McGowan (136) and Lidia Whistleon (142) also return.
Burzynski wants to compete for the district and EPC championships and grab a top 10 team finish in Hershey.
“The program continues to experience remarkable growth each year, both in numbers and in talent,” he said. “What started as a small group of trailblazers has quickly transformed into a thriving team. We have many athletes who have participated in spring, summer, and fall practices and competitions heading into this season. This steady expansion is a testament to the hard work of the athletes, the support from the Bethlehem Area School District Administration and community, the Hurricane Wrestling Club, and the growing recognition of girls wrestling as a PIAA Sanctioned sport. We are setting the stage for long-term success and sustainability.”
The Hurricanes open the season on December 11 against Emmaus and then head to North Penn on Dec. 14 for the Annual Girls Invitational to start the year.
