Curtain Rises: Civic Theatre, Pennsylvania Playhouse stage Christmas classics

Civic Theatre of Allentown and Pennsylvania Playhouse are rolling out the Christmas classics for the holiday season.

Civic Theatre stages its 33rd production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” Dec. 6 - Dec. 21 on the Main Stage of the historic 19th Street Theater.

Pennsylvania Playhouse presents the beloved musical “White Christmas,” Dec. 6 - Dec. 22 for the third time on its Bethlehem stage.

Civic’s “A Christmas Carol” is co-directed by Civic Theatre of Allentown Managing Artistic Director William Sanders and Civic Theatre School Administrator JoAnn Wilchek Basist.

Civic’s adaptation of Dickens’ novela is by Sanders and Civic Theatre Board President Emeritus Sharon Lee Glassman.

Bill Joachim plays Ebenezer Scrooge. Eight-year-old Cashton Morrow plays Tiny Tim. The pair are reunited after playing the same roles together in 2022. Joachim and Morrow have each played the roles three times. Joachim played Scrooge in 2021 and Morrow played Tiny Tim in 2023.

The show, which tells the tale of the miserly Scrooge and his redemption following visits by three Christmas spirits, has included thousands of Lehigh Valley children over the years. More than 70 children in two casts will fill the stage with urchins, carolers and party children, among other roles for this year’s production, Basist says.

Real-life father and son Christopher and Alex Pizolato will play Bob and Peter Cratchit.

Certain performances will have a surprise appearance by Charles Dickens, who is portrayed by Jarrod Yuskauskas, who played Scrooge last year.

The Dec. 19 performance is pay-what-you-will.

Parker Ryan directs the show. Joey Schubert is choreographer. Amanda Haag is music director.

The book is by David Ives and Paul Blake, with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. “White Christmas” opened on Broadway in 2008 when it was nominated for two Tony Awards.

The story follows veterans Bob Wallace (Anthony Hahn) and Phil Davis (Armand Reiser), who have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II.

The two men are smitten by Betty (Lucy Moore) and Judy (Caitlin McDermott), a singing sisters duo who are heading to their annual Christmas show at a Vermont lodge.

Bob and Dave discover the inn is owned by their former Army commander General Waverly (Mark Boyer), but the inn is struggling to survive. With the help of the inn’s concierge Martha (Nancy Sturm) and the general’s granddaughter, Susan (Luci Schneck); Bob, Phil, Betty and Judy decide to put on a big show to draw in business and save the inn.

The musical includes many well-known standards such as “Blue Skies,” “I Love A Piano,” “How Deep Is the Ocean,” “White Christmas,” “Sisters,” “Snow,” “Count Your Blessings (Instead of Sheep)” and “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.
