Parkland gets past Hurricanes; Pates up next

The Parkland High School football team ended the regular season with a loss to rival Emmaus before entering the District 11 6A Tournament as the three seed. The Trojans then fell behind right away against six-seed Liberty in a District 11 6A quarterfinal round game.

But Parkland (9-2 overall) responded with 13 unanswered points and 27 of the game’s final 30 points, taking down the Hurricanes 27-9 last Friday night at Parkland School District Stadium.

“We didn’t want to be playing from behind, especially after the week before,” said head coach Tim Moncman. “The guys did a great job in answering the call and really playing good football to keep us playing another week.”

Liberty (7-4) finished its opening drive of the game with a three-yard touchdown run 2:06 into the contest, but missed the point after attempt to lead 6-0. Then, Osmany Guzman and Leo Dauberman connected for two straight passing touchdowns, one for 30 yards in the first quarter and another for 15 yards in the second quarter as the Trojans took their first lead at 13-6, which the two teams went into the locker rooms at halftime with the same score.

“Those two have been doing it all season,” Moncman said. “They’ve really found a connection and are comfortable playing with each other.”

Following the intermission, the Hurricanes connected on a 29-yard field goal with 6:04 left in the third to cut their deficit to 13-9.

But once again, Dauberman found the end zone, this time, rushing in from a yard away to give his team a 20-9 lead late in the third quarter. TJ Lawrence added a 28-yard rushing touchdown 1:47 into the fourth quarter to round out the scoring for the Trojans.

Parkland will now hit the road and take on the second seed, Freedom, on Friday night in a semifinal at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium. The other semifinal is top-seeded Easton against third-seeded Emmaus.
