Parkland falls in state playoffs

The Parkland High School girls volleyball team’s run at a PIAA state championship ended in the quarterfinal round last Saturday.

Parkland entered the state tournament as the second-place team out of District 11 and defeated District 4 champ Williamsport in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 in the first round back on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

The Trojans met their match four days later and were taken down by Spring-Ford, the fifth-place team out of District 1, in straight sets by scores of 24-26, 22-25, 20-25.

In the victory over the Millionaires, Sarah Furey led the attack with 10 kills and added three service aces. She finished with a double-double, recording 10 digs. Genda Avdijaj tallied eight kills and two blocks. Sarah Paugh finished with seven kills. Kasia Burda notched five kills, two blocks and two digs. Josee Kim contributed 14 assists and 10 digs for a double-double. Gabby Brader added 17 assists, four digs, two kills and two aces. Izzy Fekula led the defense with 16 digs.

Against the Rams, Lily Andersen paced the attack with 11 kills and had six digs and a block. Furey recorded another double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Burda totaled nine kills and a team-high four blocks. Avdijaj tallied six digs and five kills. Fekula finished with 21 digs and Kim contributed 27 assists and nine digs.

Parkland, the District 11 4A runner-up, finished the year 17-8 overall and 12-4 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The final four in 4A includes Spring-Ford against Central Dauphin in one semifinal and Hempfield against North Allegheny in the other semifinal.
