LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LIBERTY HS NEWS By Finn Dougherty

Heading into the holidays, Bethlehem residents celebrate the city in a variety of ways, some pertaining to our local high schools, Liberty shining as of late.

The Hurricanes have taken a lot of positive turns in fall athletics, such as the district winning volleyball team, and ever rapid production of the football team.

Defeating the Parkland Trojans in a narrow 17-15 five set win, the LHS girls volleyball team were crowned district champions Oct. 31, their first title in 22 years. School spirit remained high throughout the match, peaking as the Trojans began a momentous comeback. The Hurricanes finished their season with an impressive 14-2 record. Though the Hurricanes would fall in the state quarterfinals, the team will forever remember this moment. Senior Bailey Corrigan also ends her high school career as the all-time points leader.

With a lot on the line this season, the Liberty football team, led by head coach Shawn Daignault, had a lot to prove, and boy did they deliver. With many impressive teams throughout the Lehigh Valley, Liberty proved to be a serious threat not only this year, but for years to come. Finishing with seven wins, a year that would outperform the last three years combined, many players would turn to the tone of their locker room. Junior Nick Schenkel emphasizes how closely team members’ sense of community relates to their success.

“The locker room vibe has been that we are hungry, and we want to prove that Liberty football is a real contender. Even though we’ve had success, this hunger and determination is still a major part of who we are as a team.” Schenkel says.

You can look forward to upcoming or current Liberty athletics, such as swimming/diving, Track & Field, boys volleyball, and more.

Liberty also debuted its fall show “Puffs” Nov. 14 with two more shows following on Saturday, Nov. 16.

Taking place in a faraway school of magic, we follow the story of Wayne Hopkins and his journey to prove that the Puffs and their wizard world is worth fighting for. Full of love, laughter and everything in between, the show came away with very warm reception as the nature of the show was a switch from Liberty Theatre’s recently serious tone. With past shows such as “The Crucible,” “Radium Girls,” and “Pride and Prejudice,” Puffs left the audience walking away with compliments that not only showed the impact of the show, but the true versatility Liberty Theatre has to offer.

Senior Gracen Frank adds to the conversation on how truly diverse and impactful his last four years with the company have been, helping him mature into who is now.

“Liberty Theater could be summed up inside one word: ‘Community.’ Spending such prolonged periods of time with a select group of people can be very tiring, yet it allows you to create relationships that go much deeper than inside a classroom.” Frank explains.
