Business, complaints addressed

The Bethlehem Area School Board tended to regular business — paying bills and reading reports at the Nov. 18 regular meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Jack Silva announced that Moravian University and Northampton Community College are once again offering scholarships to Liberty and Freedom high school seniors.

The board approved additional technical studies at the Fountain Hill ES construction site, primarily regarding the engineering behavior of earth materials. It uses the principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to solve its engineering problems.

During public comment, resident Rob Pangaro spoke about special needs resources and the impact on the children they serve, and complained about neglect. He said one of his four BASD-attending has special needs and that his year of complaints has received no response from the district, which he called “a blatant slap in the face.”

President Michael Faccinetto said by policy the board does not speak to individual student cases but he listed the numerous professionals — nurses, special Ed team, administrators, general educators, and other stakeholders, who are dedicated to helping children transition both into the district and adapt to an Individual Education Program.

Faccinetto said, “All documents are reviewed to understand the students’ needs. This is a collaboration of the student’s previous supports, additional evaluations and their alignment with PA State regulations and the family. They are cognizant of all children’s’ needs and will provide a safe and healthy academic environment.”
