LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

A centennial celebration-Congregation Brith Shalom, 1924-2024

On Sunday, Oct. 20, Congregation Brith Shalom located at 1190 Macada Road, Bethlehem, held a Sukkot celebration, which is a harvest holiday as part of the year of celebrations for its 100th anniversary. The event included a dinner, a blessing of thanksgiving in the social hall of the synagogue and also appetizers outside in the Sukkah, a shelter made with branches to symbolize the original booths used by the Israelites.

After the meal, Rabbi Michael Singer announced the synagogue received a proclamation from Gov. Josh Shapiro. The document was titled “Citation from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania” and was sponsored the Honorable Steve Samuelson, PA House of Representatives.

The House of Representatives of Pennsylvania acknowledges revered places of religious worship that contribute to the well-being of their communities and ultimately to all of the people of the commonwealth.

Congregation Brith Shalom, established in Bethlehem, is being recognized for its enduring legacy and its continued commitment to the spiritual and cultural enrichment of the region on its 100th anniversary. Founded as the Brith Shalom Community Center in the Southside neighborhood in Bethlehem, Congregation Brith Shalom moved to its present location on West Macada Road in 1985.

An asset to the City of Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley, the synagogue services are a cultural gathering place for numerous local groups and cultural events, including Scouting organizations, a choral society, musicians, performers and bridge players. Congregation Brith Shalom promotes civic engagement by serving as a polling place, offering election information and providing social activities for individuals who are older and children. In addition, it supports local organizations by providing clothing and food to those in need.

Presently following the spiritual guidance of Rabbi Michael Singer, the members of Congregation Brith Shalom have enjoyed a long history of service to God and their fellow citizens. The synagogue has been blessed with rabbis and laypeople who strive to live in a manner that gives testimony to their spiritual beliefs. Members’ faith, determination, generosity and stewardship have enabled Congregation Brith Shalom to become a vital and inspiring presence in their community.
