Zeke Spencer puts in the work
When he was 4-years-old, Northampton’s Zeke Spencer began gymnastics. It was a venture that he pursued for 10 years.
Upon beginning his high school career, Spencer took to football. So far, it has been an enjoyable and productive experience for the junior. He has been one of the team’s primary return specialists as well as a backup running back.
In their recent district playoff game against Freedom, Spencer had four kickoff returns for 74 yards, and he also ran for 20 yards on six carries.
“I started playing football my freshman year at Northampton,” recalled Spencer. “I was confident in myself coming into the sport as I was a gymnast for 10 years. Also, I never got to fully start on offense, but always impacted the game with the opportunities I got.”
Head coach John Toman has watched Spencer develop into one of the team’s more consistent players with a strong work ethic. Spencer also competes on the Kids’ track team, running the 100, 200, 400, and is a member of the 400 relay team.
“He is great team player,” beamed Toman. “He works extremely hard all year round, even during track season you know he is working. Zeke only started playing football as a freshman.
“This season, he took over as our returner for both punts and kickoffs and had several huge returns. He became the backup tailback with some big plays down the stretch, including the winning touchdown against Bethlehem Catholic.”
In his freshman year, Spencer was appreciative of the constant support of coach Robert Holmes, and he also began to feel comfortable at running back. He also has been very enthusiastic about his track career.
“Coach Holmes had a huge impact on my love for the game,” stressed Spencer. “I love running back as it feels natural to me and I get to show off my abilities. This season has been amazing so far as I got some great opportunities to run the ball and start some games on defense.
“Track had been awesome. I’m so glad to have picked it up and can’t wait to run again this spring.”
Spencer also has plans to enjoy this week’s Thanksgiving Day battle with Catasauqua, and the entire day.
“I have some good memories about Thanksgiving Day,” added Spencer. “Some of my memories from turkey day are most of my family coming out and watching me play last year, and enjoying Thanksgiving after a great win.”
