Letter to the Editor: Resident disappointed in council’s change of donation policy

To the Editor:

I am very disappointed in the recent action of Northampton Borough Council concerning its change of policy on the borough Christmas tree.

In late 2022, I was asked if I would like to donate a tree to be used as the borough Christmas tree in 2023. The borough would remove the tree and a stump. I had two large trees in my yard. I said I would prefer to donate both trees — one for Christmas 2023 and the other for 2024.

In November of 2023, a crew from the borough, with help from Witt’s Tree Service, removed the first tree. As promised, in spring they came with a stump grinder and removed the stump.

The second tree had cables running through it, so I arranged with PPL to have power disconnected. I called the borough office in September and confirmed I was working with PPL. I spoke with Rich Ackerman, of the public works department, and we finalized a date to donate the tree.

On Nov. 12, Rich Ackerman called to tell me borough council decided to relocate the tree lighting, and they no longer wanted my tree. I called council President Judy Kutzler and borough Manager Brian Welsko and got slightly conflicting stories about the decision.

My original agreement with the borough was to donate both trees, but the borough only did half the bargain and left one. I had already made arrangements with PPL, planned time off from work for the removal and even removed plants from around the base of the tree in preparation. Not having the tree removed has created an inconvenience for me. I would still like find a recipient and donate it, if possible either this year or next.
