With the holiday season approaching fast, Salisbury High School is thriving with activities like the start of winter sports, the American Cultures I field trip and preparations for the spring production. From bocce courts to historic battlefields and the theater stage, Salisbury is active all around.
Bocce, Salisbury’s newest unified sport, is kicking off its second season with high hopes and determination. The team’s first season was last year and the team had an impressive season, making it to the second round of districts. As the season starts back up again, it is predicted to be another exciting season.
Bocce Team Manager Makenna Jones reflected on the team’s first season: “For everyone’s first year, they made big improvements over the season. The environment was very positive.” Matches will be coming up in a few weeks and everyone is encouraged to come out and support this new and outstanding team.
Meanwhile, American Cultures I students recently went on the annual Gettysburg field trip, which was held Nov. 18 and 19. The Civil War is a part of the curriculum and the field trip provided students with an opportunity to connect with the history in a deeper and more meaningful way.
The students toured the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum, where they were able to see the historic battlefields and watch an educational film that gives more insight on what the battle was about. The field trip was able to give students a chance to engage with an important chapter in American history the classroom is not able to provide. Exploring the battlefields gives a realistic showing of the Civil War which shows the sacrifices made during that time.
After a successful showing of “Our Town,” the theater group is already looking ahead to the spring production. “The Hello Girls” is scheduled to run March 13-16, 2025. This musical tells the story of America’s first women soldiers, bilingual telephone operators who served on the front lines during World War I. Their contributions not only helped turn the tide of the war but also sparked a decadeslong fight for equality and recognition.
Auditions for the production will be held after school Dec. 9 and 10, with students able to choose one day to audition. The theater department has always had captivating shows, so mark your calendars for the next production this spring.
As Salisbury winter sports begin, remember to support and encourage all athletes in this exciting new season.
