Rooted in local trees
Through a series of seven early September tree plantings around Bethlehem, local artists have been recognized and honored for their roles as ‘art creators’ in the Bethlehem area. The individual ceremonies at each are the focus of a film being produced. “Rooted” covers the stories of artists who have contributed over decades to the web of artistry by individuals integral to the city’s arts scene.
Tree plantings took place at Central Moravian Church honoring artistic director Greg Funfgeld and the Bach Choir, Zoellner Arts Center honoring both staff and artists, the Charles A. Brown Ice House on Sand Island honoring Doug Roysdon and the Mock Turtle Marionette Theatre, Payrow Plaza next to the Bethlehem Area Public Library honoring the Bethlehem arts community, Yosko Park honoring John and Barbara Peterson, Ricardo Viera and the street theater, Parham Park, honoring Bill and Bridget George and Touchstone Theatre, and the Godfrey Daniels Garden honoring Dave Fry and Godfrey Daniels.
The film is being produced in partnership with the Southside Film Institute by filmmaker Aidan Gilrain McKenna and will be premiered at the 2025 Southside Film Festival.
Over 200 hours of filming and interviews will delve into the impact, transformation and future prospects for the evolutionary role of arts in Bethlehem.
