Wellington’s switch to LB pays off for Roughies
Catasauqua’s Chris Wellington recently switched from defensive end to linebacker, and it wasn’t a major transition for the junior.
In fact, Wellington had an ideal role model in former Rough Rider 2023 grad Chad Beller, who led the Colonial/Schuylkill league in tackles his junior and senior years, and was a small school all-state selection.
“CJ (Beller) might be the biggest influence because of the way he got himself involved in almost every play,” stressed Wellington. “I tried to do that in my game. I like playing the middle, and I never expected going from a defensive end to linebacker but I think it suits me and puts me and the team in the best position.”
Wellington followed well in his role model’s footsteps. He leads the team with 73 tackles this season, and has a sack and fumble recovery. Last season, he was sixth on the team with 44 stops.
Roughies’ head coach Joe Henrich has appreciated Wellington’s work ethic and leadership skills.
“Chris is a hardworking kid,” said Henrich. “He always has a positive demeanor and the willingness to be a vocal leader.
“He would do anything for his team and his teammates.”
Wellington began playing football for the CYAA in sixth grade, and there appeared to be an immediate connection. It also didn’t take long for Wellington to get comfortable in high school.
“My first year playing was a pretty good year and that’s when I started feeling confident and passionate for it,” said Wellington. “My first start on defense was my sophomore year against Northern Lehigh. I had 11 tackles that game. I would also say that’s my most memorable game overall.”
This season, Wellington saw their victory over Palisades as a key moment. He also has seen positives in spite of the Roughies’ 3-7 campaign.
“The Palisades game was awesome,” said Wellington. “We had a good performance and the ending really showed what kind of team we can be. I’ve had a lot of influence with my teammates who I have played and still play with.
“Although the results haven’t been good, I enjoyed this season. A lot of the guys I played with this year were the same ones from my first year with a couple additions. It definitely holds a special place in my heart.”
Wellington is excited for the Thanksgiving Day battle with Northampton, and he can see how it can be surreal.
“I remember the Turkey Day games throughout the years,” said Wellington. “I always remember seeing the football players in the pep rally, and it kind of hits different that I’ve been one of them now for the last three years.”
