Montgomery in middle of it all
Northampton’s Riley Montgomery likes to be in the center of the action. At least, Montgomery does on the football field.
“I really enjoy playing center because it’s unique to every other position on the field,” boasted Montgomery. “There’s no other position like it. This season has been great for me, primarily because it’s helped me find who I am as a player.
“It’s also allowed me to start the recruitment process and post film for coaches to watch.”
The 265-pound junior has manned the middle for the Konkrete Kids this season, and his football path to his current state has been a long one. Although, there were some interruptions along the way. Aside from football, Montgomery was anxious to see what else was out there.
“I stared playing football in kindergarten at the NAA,” said Montgomery. “I stopped playing after two years and picked it back up in eighth grade.”
Always aware of his size, Montgomery used it to his advantage.
“I stopped playing football early because I wanted to try other sports like wrestling and soccer. I returned because I stopped playing soccer and wanted to find a sport that I thought I could play throughout high school.
“I was a big kid and decided that football would be the best option. I’ve been in love with it ever since.”
Montgomery started at left tackle in middle school, but he made the transition in high school. He has been grateful to Northampton line coach Derek Blieler for his constant support.
“I started feeling confident playing about halfway through my freshman season,” said Montgomery. “My first time starting on varsity offense was the opening Pennsbury game this year. My most memorable game was defeating Whitehall in week five.
“Whitehall was the most memorable because we had just come off two hard losses, and it was a need to win game for our season. We took the game very seriously and wanted revenge for last year’s game.”
Montgomery appears ready for the annual Thanksgiving Day battle with Catasauqua.
“Last Turkey Day was memorable for me because I got to carry out the Northampton flag when we ran onto the field,” stressed Montgomery. “I’m not very anxious for the game.
“There’s always the nervousness of how you are going to perform, but after the first snap, that goes away.
“It’s really just the excitement of getting to play with the seniors one last time that’s on my mind.”
And Montgomery will be right in the center of it.
