Grigsby makes golf history at Liberty
This past season, Philippa Grigsby became the first female golfer for Liberty High School to play in the District 11 tournament for the Hurricanes.
It was a proud moment for the junior, but it also was long journey for her to get there. Grigsby also began to understand the importance of family along her way.
Since she fractured a disc in her lower back as a freshman, Grigsby has dealt with the pain as well as the anxiety. So, to call her climb to district bittersweet, it could easily be an understatement.
Dealing with her issues, Grigsby worked her way through the postseason. She shot a 115 at the East Penn Conference championships and followed with a 110 at districts, dealing with her physical and mental challenges.
“I felt like I did the best I could,” she stated. “I’ve dealt with a lot of back problems, and golf has been a challenge. So, for me to be the first Liberty High School girl to make it to districts, makes me feel proud of myself.
“I had a bad round at districts, but I know I tried my best, and that’s all that matters to me.”
Grigsby began playing golf in fifth grade with her father, Bryon, originally to try and placate him. It also further solidified the bond with her father.
“I think I just wanted to do something with him that he would enjoy,” said Grigsby. “I knew he loved golf. I thought that if I could get good enough to play with him, then I’d give him some competition and make him proud.
“My dad has been my biggest influence in golf.”
Yet, her fears overcame her again after ninth grade. She also had a self-realization about herself.
“I stopped playing golf in 10th grade,” she said. “I wanted to give myself time to heal, and I was scared to hurt my back again. I think it plays a part in me not wanting to play competitively next season.
“I think I’m not a very competitive person, so I don’t have much of a drive to be the best in the sport.”
Head coach Steve Bradley was impressed with Grigsby this past season.
“Phillipa worked on her game all season,” stressed Bradley. “She seemed to enjoy playing with the other girls from our team and those from Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic during practice rounds.
“We were excited to see her in the conference championships and districts.”
However, Grigsby currently doesn’t see herself being part of the big picture at Liberty next season.
“Next season, I plan on just playing recreationally with my dad and friends,” she said. “I don’t think I’ll go any further competitively in the sport, just because of my own personal preference.”
Whether she does or not, Grigsby will always be part of Liberty golf history.
