D’Amico set to play softball at Lehigh

Freedom senior Maia D’Amico signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Lehigh University on Nov. 13 at Freedom.

Freedom softball coach Michele Laubach told a classroom filled with family, friends, teammates, and coaches about D’Amico’s commitment to her school team even though the third baseman competed in travel ball as well.

“I’m extremely happy with the turnout today,” D’Amico said. “It means a lot, seeing everyone here and supporting me. It just makes me super excited.”

Laubach also spoke of D’Amico’s commitment to the sport, noting the batting cage her father built in the family’s backyard.

D’Amico, who also plays basketball, had an official visit to Lehigh a few weeks ago.

“It’s super close to home, which is something that I wanted,” she said. “Their academics are really good there, and that’s something I value a lot. Their softball team has been competitive every year in the Patriot League.”

The Mountain Hawks had a conference record of 14-4 in the Patriot League last year under head coach Fran Troyan.

“He pretty much told me what my role would be on the team and to be flexible on where I play,” said D’Amico. “All the girls were super nice. I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback.”

D’Amico is on course to reach 100 high school career hits for Freedom this coming spring.
