Vikettes top Trojans for EPC championship
The Parkland High School girls soccer team has been the team to beat in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference over the last decade. The Trojans have won nine consecutive conference championships.
But Parkland, which finished third in the 2024 regular season conference standings at 14-2-2 overall and 14-1-1 in the EPC, saw its reign of dominance come to an end in 2024 as it fell to the top seed and conference regular season champions, Central Catholic, 3-1 last Saturday afternoon in the conference title game at Whitehall High School.
“I felt they did a better job in finding each other and looking for the next girl to have success,” said Parkland head coach Al Haddad. “We’ve had a great run, but give credit to Central. We still have a lot more to play for though.”
The regular season was still a success, and according to Haddad, there were some challenges and ups-and-downs they had to deal with this season.
“I feel we went through a few hurdles during the season that the squad needed to work through,” said Haddad. “The players worked hard to find a rhythm as competition increased as we wound done the season.”
The Vikettes (18-1-2) got out in front early, scoring the game’s opening goal just 29 seconds into the game and the score remained 1-0 at halftime. Delilah Zaiter knotted up the game for the Trojans with a goal with 28:12 to play on an assist by Julia Hayward. But Central quickly answered and scored back-to-back goals within two minutes of each other to take control of the game and finish it out.
LeMiah Clemons finished with four saves and Hanna Hertzog made five saves for the Trojans.
Parkland earned the two seed in the District 11 playoffs and will host the seventh seed Freedom in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday.
“Simply try to get back to basics and playing feet and simple,” Haddad said. “Looking forward to seeing how they regroup after not being in this situation (league Champion) in over a decade.”
