Pirates top Falcons in season finale
The Salisbury High School football team’s season ended Friday night with a 40-0 loss to Palisades.
The Falcons (4-6) finish with their most wins in a season since 2019, when they went 6-4 in the regular season.
Last Friday against Palisades, the Falcons had trouble slowing down the Pirates’ balanced offense that threw for 139 yards while passing for another 139.
Palisades running back John Haubert piled up 92 yards on 17 carries while scoring three times in the win. Quarterback Jack Trickel completed 10 of 16 passes with one interception.
Salisbury moved the ball, but four Falcon drives ended with turnovers as two fumbles and a pair of interceptions ended four possessions. Derek Trinidad led Salisbury with 77 yards on 13 carries.
Palisades started the game with a successful onside kick, but was held to a three-and-out thanks to a couple tackles from Jaiden Claudio.
Salisbury took over and moved the ball from its own 20-yard line to the Pirate 45 before punting.
Palisades then went 63 yards in six plays, capped by Haubert’s 33-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead with 2:37 left in the first quarter.
The Falcons used a fake punt to keep alive their second possession, which went from their own 15-yard line to the Pirate 32 in eight plays before an interception gave the ball back to Palisades.
The Salisbury defense forced a Palisades punt, but a fumble on a fourth-down-and four near midfield gave the Pirates the ball at the Falcon 43-yard line.
The Pirates used four plays to cover the 43 yards as quarterback Gregory Borgesson hit Solomon Riddle for a 19-yard touchdown with 5:24 left in the first half.
After a quick Falcon three-and-out, the Pirates drove 46 yards in seven plays to pay dirt. Haubert ran it in from two-yards out to give his team a 21-0 lead 40 seconds before halftime.
Palisades extended the lead two plays into the second half when Borgesson found Riddle again, this time for a 58-yard touchdown strike and a 27-0 lead just 1:31 into the second half.
Salisbury’s first three possessions of the second half ended with two fumbles and an interception. The Falcon defense forced a Pirate punt and Jordan Tocci-Wachter intercepted a pass to help keep Palisades from adding to the lead, temporarily.
After Salisbury’s third turnover of the half, the Pirates took over at the Falcon 21-yard line and scored in four plays with Haubert scoring from a yard out.
Salisbury got the ball back and moved it 40 yards before a turnover on downs gave the ball back to the Pirates, who went 73 yards in five plays, capped by a 12-yard Haubert touchdown for a 40-0 lead with 6:18 left in the game.
Salisbury’s final possession again saw the Falcons move the ball, going from their own 9-yard line to the Pirate 26 before stalling with less than a minute left in the game.
