PHS field hockey enters D-11 tourney

Parkland scored the first goal of their EPC quarterfinal contest just 49 seconds into the game when Rosella Birns drove home a shot off a corner that beat the Northampton keeper inside the near post. The Trojans never looked back as they tallied twice more in the first period on the way to a 5-2 win over the Konkrete Kids last Saturday.

For Northampton, there was a sense of déjà vu after having surrendered a first minute goal to Whitehall in their regular-season finale. The K-Kids were able to rally to win that battle in overtime, but there was no threat of comeback against the Trojans.

Olivia Esteban scored the prettiest goal of the match as she knocked a ball out of the air and into the Northampton cage at the 3:28 mark to put Parkland up 2-0.

Anna Sensinger scored what proved to be the winning goal with 26 seconds left in the first period when she helped the Trojans convert on their third corner of the quarter.

A scoreless second period sent the teams into the halftime break with Parkland holding a 3-0 lead.

Jenna Mayer scored a short-handed goal at the 8:23 mark of the third period and notched her second 61 seconds later, assisted by Sensinger.

The K-Kids broke up the shutout with a pair of goals in the final period. Mackenzie Connell scored with 7:23 left in the game and Julia Behnke got her goal four minutes later. Lauren Reznick assisted on both goals.

After bearing Northampton Parkland went on to fall in the league semifinal, 4-0 to eventual champ Emmaus.

The Trojans (14-5-1) earned the No. 4 seed for the District 11 Class 3A playoffs and will meet No. 5 Stroudsburg in Thursday’s quarterfinal round. Parkland beat the Mountaineers 2-0 in a regular season meeting on Oct. 2.

Thursday’s winner will advance to face top seed Emmaus or No. 8 Liberty in the semifinals. The Hornets are seeking their 36th consecutive district title.
