McCartney repeats as league champ

Emmaus junior Mady McCartney ran to her second straight East Penn Conference Cross Country gold medal last week, leading the Hornets to a second-place finish at the event, held last Tuesday at DeSales University.

The Emmaus boys team took third place last week, led by Conor Fisher’s sixth-place finish.

McCartney, the defending league and district champ who finished 25th in last year’s state championships, ran the DSU course in 18:52.5 to finish over 10 seconds ahead of Katie Drabouski (Liberty), who placed second in 19:03.50.

Emmaus senior Payton Campbell finished fourth at leagues, with senior Isabella Scarlata 10th, junior Olivia Fleck 17th and sophomore Grace Nosal 20th to cap the team scoring.

Ava Palamara (27th), Isabella Alwine-Balliro (30th), Addison Johnson (33rd), Amanda Gulliver (38th) and Julie Murphy-Peterson (39th) also ran in the league championship race for Emmaus.

Easton earned this year’s girls team title after five years of dominance by Emmaus. The Rovers, which gave Emmaus a battle for last year’s title, had a team score of 43 last week with Emmaus (52) second and Parkland (93) third.

The Hornets will look to get revenge on the Rovers at this week’s District 11 Championship meet, scheduled for Wednesday at DeSales.

In the boys race last week, Fisher, a senior, led the Hornets as the team’s only top-10 finisher. Senior Jared Petre (11th), junior Ryan Fach (19th), freshman David Hearn (26th) and senior Richard Will (29th) rounded out the Emmaus team score.

Freshman Michael Carwell (30th) just missed out on scoring for the team, while teammates Zachary Zappile (48th), Sullivan Hochbein (57th), Matthew Sirignano (58th) and Maximus Miller (75th) also ran in the championship meet for Emmaus.
