It was a unique situation for the Parkland High School girls soccer team in its opening game of the District 11 4A Tournament last week as the Trojans entered the tournament following a loss in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament.
This was the first time in 10 years the team did not enter districts as a league champ.
In the first-round district playoff game, Parkland’s Isabella Hallal and Julia Hayward each scored two goals and Avery Maier and Mackenzie McNeely found the back of the net once each to help lead second-seeded Parkland to a 6-0 victory over seventh-seeded Freedom in the district quarterfinal round last Wednesday night at Parkland.
Hallal gave her team an early 2-0 lead with 13:29 left in the opening half and the score remained a two-goal advantage into halftime. The Trojans (17-3-2 overall) recorded the last four goals in the second half. Delaney Chilcote assisted Hallal’s first goal and Jummai Umaru assisted on Maier’s goal from a corner kick. LaMiah Clemons and Hanna Hertzog split time in goal for the Trojans and each finished with one save.
Parkland had a 17-0 advantage over Freedom in corner kicks on the night. The Trojans outshot the Patriots 21-2 in the game.
The Trojans’ run ended in the semifinal round to rival Emmaus as they were shutout Tuesday afternoon 1-0 at Catasauqua High School. Ella Scharper scored the lone goal of the game for the Hornets, coming off a corner kick that she took. Lamiah Clemons finished with three saves.
Parkland’s season ends at 17-4-2. Emmaus will take on fourth seed Northampton in the District championship game on Thursday.
