Freedom boys soccer team losing large senior class
Freedom’s boys soccer team lost to only one opponent all season, and with an overall record of 19-3 will graduate 14 seniors from its 2024 squad.
“I think they were thrown every bit of adversity this year leading up to this game,” said Freedom coach Tyler Nolan after a district semifinal against Parkland. “We don’t have Mike [Deluhery], Brady [Sutton] has a bum ankle, we have kids who were sick, so it stinks. You wish you could be going in with a full allotment of players, but I couldn’t be prouder of them and what their effort level was, their tenacity, they bought into the game plan and executed it for more than 95 minutes.”
The Patriots and Trojans went to overtime for the second time this season when the Trojans came out on top, 1-0, on Oct. 29 at Emmaus.
“They created chances, and sometimes one sticks,” said Freedom coach Tyler Nolan.
Kyle Tobia’s header in the 105th minute on an assist by Caleb Daniels sent the Trojans to the district final, which was played on Oct. 31 and won by Parkland.
“That’s a really tough save to make because it’s coming back across,” Coach Nolan said. “It was just a good quality goal and you tip your cap to it.”
Freedom’s best scoring chances came early in the match, but the Patriots couldn’t convert on three separate occasions in the first 20 minutes of play.
Patriot seniors are goalies Micah Lawser, Alexander Reeder, and Finn Houle, defenders Logan Shupp, Connor Blake, Samuel Matlock, Derek Nunez, and Aaron Smith, midfielders Alejandro Herrera, Brady Sutton, and Michael Deluhery, and forwards Ryan Freeman-Nield, Ryan Famawa, and George Botros.
“It’s an incredible group we’re losing,” Coach Nolan said. “Every senior class should hope to leave with a mark, and this class certainly does.”
