A borough tribute to veterans

Northampton Joint Veterans Association held a solemn Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 9 at Veterans Plaza, 14th Street and Washington Avenue. The group is comprised of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4714, Catholic War Veterans Post 454 and American Legion Post 353.

The three veterans organizations work in unison to assist veterans and keep a focus on veterans’ and their families’ sacrifice for our freedom.

VFW Commander Larry Schlittler served as the master of ceremonies. The agenda began with the tolling of the bell on the Veterans Plaza 11 times to signify Nov. 11 as the official Veterans Day.

The next item was the singing of the national anthem by Joan Glover, CWV second vice commander. The national anthem was followed by an opening prayer from Father Patrick Lamb, Queenship of Mary Roman Catholic Church pastor.

Schlittler concluded his opening remarks by addressing attendees and veterans present.

“On behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Catholic War Veterans and the American Legion of Northampton, all Northampton residents present thank you all for your dedicated service,” he said in addressing the veterans.

Glover reviewed the POW/MIA table, explaining the meaning of the various items placed there.

Northampton Mayor Anthony Pristash offered accolades to all the veterans and attendees present for the strong concern and honors provided to veterans in Northampton.

Peter Wlodek, of the CWV, also offered remarks and, with other leaders, presented recognition honors to the more than 50 Vietnam veterans or their loved ones. The first four award honors were given to surviving spouses of those soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice serving America in Vietnam.

There was reverence for the Vietnam veterans and their sacrifice, with some shedding tears as they were touched by the honors bestowed upon them.

Attendees were encouraged to sing along with “God Bless America,” which many did. A rifle salute followed the song and the playing of echo taps. Bagpiper Gene Kutzler performed “Amazing Grace,” which was followed by a closing prayer.

At the event conclusion, all present were invited to visit American Legion Post 353, which was open for members and guests.
