‘No Shave November’ for Emmaus Police Department
Emmaus Borough Council gathered for its regularly scheduled meeting Nov. 4, unanimously approving a range of agenda items from budget adjustments to community safety ordinances.
During public comments, local business owner Elliot Billman approached council with a proposal to help extend the parking behind Anytime Fitness, which would require slight reconstruction of the lot behind the building and along Green Street. Council asked that he submit the proposal in writing to be assessed at the committee level.
In a community minute, Councilman Brent Labenberg showed appreciation for the Knauss Harvest Festival, saying it was well attended.
Mayor Lee Ann Gilbert expressed enormous gratitude toward the community for the turnout for trick-or-treat night.
Council President Chad Balliett closed the community minute by thanking the veterans in the community and across the country as Veterans Day approaches Nov. 11.
Council then reviewed and approved the minutes of its Oct. 21 meeting.
A new natural gas bid was approved in decisions on bids. The bid is slightly higher than what the borough is currently paying, although costs have continued to rise. Council debated whether to go with a 12-month or 24-month rate, but in a split 4-3 vote, they decided on the 24-month contract with Snyder Brothers.
In new business, council tabled Ordinance 1272, which will adjust the Americans with Disabilities Act parking requirements in the borough. This ordinance seeks to improve accessibility for residents by modifying ADA-compliant parking spaces within the borough. However, Emmaus Borough Manager Shane Pepe said the changes need more of a review before being read before council.
In Gilbert’s mayor report, she announced Proclamation 2024-607, officially designating Veterans Memorial Triangle Park as a dedicated space to honor the service and sacrifice of local veterans. She also announced the Emmaus Police Department is running it’s No Shave November campaign. The officers will donate $50 to grow their beards and $50 to shave them. The money raised is then used to buy Christmas gifts for those in need.
In public safety, council approved the hire of a new full-time police officer in the borough who will begin under a probationary period.
The budget and finance committee approved Resolution 2024-28, detailing significant revenues and expenses from October. Additionally, council agreed on an amendment to the e-services contract for the ambulance subscription in the borough.
There were no agenda items under reports from various committees, including public works, health and sanitation, parks and recreation and community relations.
Council adjourned the meeting for an executive session focused on personnel and budget discussions.
The next Emmaus Borough Council meeting is scheduled 6 p.m. Nov. 18.
