Burn ban in place through remainder of drought emergency

Alburtis Borough Council held its Oct. 30 meeting covering several agenda items and passing resolutions to support borough operations and address community needs.

Mayor Kathleen Palmer opened the meeting with a thank you to all the volunteers who helped to put on the Alburtis Halloween Parade, stating it was a wonderful event. Council then moved to appoint an assistant borough solicitor by approving Resolution No. 2024-14, which passed unanimously. The new assistant solicitor is John P. Karoly III.

In public comments, a resident thanked council for adopting recycling services once a week in the borough. Additionally, he said there is a streetlight out down near Third Street and he was hoping to get some help from the borough in getting the light back on. The borough manager said he would go out and take pictures to send to PPL Electric.

Routine business followed with the approval of minutes from the Oct. 9 meeting, along with the payment of October bills. The bills for payment totaled $316,755.30, with a large amount toward acquiring the newly required police radio equipment. The cost of the radio equipment is covered by a recently acquired grant.

Council then reviewed reports from fiscal consultants and the Macungie Ambulance Service, with updates on financial health and recent emergency response statistics. Councilman John Aleszczyk requested the borough engineer work to close out several long-standing projects with little work left to help lessen the engineering fees.

Next, council approved Resolution No. 2024-15, adopting the Lehigh Valley 2024 Hazard Mitigation Plan to strengthen disaster preparedness within the borough. In light of the ongoing drought emergency, Ordinance No. 588 was also unanimously passed, prohibiting outdoor burning in Alburtis for the foreseeable future to mitigate fire risks.

A funding request from the Lower Macungie Library to increase the borough’s annual contribution was met with positive remarks, though the council deferred a decision pending budget review.

The council followed this with an executive session focused on personnel matters. After the executive session, council decided to table Resolution No. 2024-16, which aims to terminate an employee following an internal review.

The next Alburtis Borough Council meeting will be held 7 p.m. Nov. 13.
