School board approves list of community education classes

New courses have been approved in the Northampton Area School District community education program for the second session of fall classes of the 2024-25 academic year.
The NASD Board of Education voted 8-1 at the Oct. 14 meeting to approve the list, roster of instructors and stipends. Classes include the following.
• Let’s Move: Low-impact workout with instructor Michelle Heisler, NASD community education program coordinator, planned for 7-7:45 p.m. Nov. 12, 19 and 26 in the multipurpose room at Siegfried Elementary School, Northampton
• Laughing Wellness: Learning benefits of laughter with instructor Lisa King, set for 7-8 p.m. Nov. 13 in the library at Northampton Area Middle School
• Lap Swim: No instructor but with lifeguards on duty, set for 7-8:30 p.m. Nov. 13, 20 and 27 in the natatorium at NAMS
• Intermediate Crochet: Make a holiday ornament with instructor Stephanie Mohler, set for 6:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 and 20 and Dec. 4 and 11 in the library at George Wolf Elementary School, Bath
• Paint Night: Instructor Jessica Krill will supply materials for the class, set for 7-9 p.m. Nov. 14 in the multipurpose room at Siegfried Elementary. You must register by Nov. 7.
NASD residency is not required to take a class. Participants must be ages 15 or older. Doctor’s permission is required for exercise programs.

School directors also voted 8-1 at the Oct. 14 board meeting to approve the following.
• Timothy Smith, head boys lacrosse coach, as of Oct. 15, at $9,427; Melissa Appleby, student services coordinator, school counselor, NAMS, effective Dec. 16, at $66,221 (master’s, Step 3), with benefits; Jared Hunsberger, biology teacher, Northampton Area High School, second semester, effective Jan. 17, 2025, at $61,255 (bachelor’s, Step 1), prorated; Gillian Armstrong, NAHS special education instructional assistant, effective Oct. 15, at $20.13 per hour, with benefits; Samantha Koch, special education instructional assistant, Franklin Elementary School, effective Sept. 16, at $20.13 per hour, with benefits; Marleah Kares, NAHS study hall instructional assistant, effective Sept. 17, at $20.13 per hour, with benefits; and Leanne Olewine, cafeteria monitor, Lehigh Elementary School, effective Oct. 15, at $19.63 per hour, with benefits
• Revised department coordinators, district coordinators, NAMS subject leaders and team leaders and their stipends, as specified by NAEA CBA, effective for the 2024-25 academic year; listing of building substitute teachers for 2024-25 school year, with building substitute per diem rate is $195 and no benefits
• Attendance of three persons from the business office at the PASBO annual conference, March 11-14, 2025, at estimated cost of $2,300, included in the 2024-25 budget
• Resignations for Janet Gehret, special education secretary, administration building, for retirement, effective Jan. 10, 2025; Curtis Reigle, NAHS mathematics teacher, as of Nov. 29; and Robert Quezada, school security officer, NAMS effective Oct. 14
• Accept, with appreciation, a donation of school supplies valued at approximately $1,345 and a cash donation of $600 for purchase of school supplies for Moore Elementary School students from American Legion Eckley E Patch Post 470, 278 Race St., Bath
At the Oct. 14 board meeting, school directors voted 7-2 in favor of the CoStars-approved quote from Barker & Barker of $88,889 to replace the front driveway at George Wolf Elementary. The work will not begin until the end of the 2024-25 school year.
The board of education next meets 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 in the auditorium at NAHS, 1619 Laubach Ave.
