For a Coplay Borough family, this Halloween was scarier than normal.
According to a news release posted on the Coplay Fire Department Facebook page, the department responded to a reported house fire in the 800 block of Catherine Drive just before 8 p.m. Oct. 30. According to Lehigh County 911 Center, the fire was on the rear deck of the two-story twin home.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they requested a second alarm be dispatched. The fire extended to the adjoining residence, causing extensive damage to both homes, the release reported.
The fire department reported the fire was under control by approximately 8:43 p.m. The fire marshal will conduct an investigation.
Two firefighters reportedly sustained minor injuries and were treated on site by EMS, the news release reported.
Other agencies that responded and assisted include the Whitehall, Northampton, Allen Township, Catasauqua, North Catasauqua, Laurys Station, Greenawalds, Walnutport, Nancy Run and Woodlawn fire departments and Cetronia Ambulance Corps.
Coplay Fire Department thanked the community for coming together to help the family. There was a Facebook post detailing some of the things needed, and residents have stepped up. There were several rounds of donations received at the fire station, including clothing, pet supplies, diapers and toiletry items.
“Thank you to everyone who already donated and continue to donate,” the fire department said on its Facebook page. “The family and the department is very grateful for everyone’s support.”
The homeowners took to Facebook to thank the fire department and community for the help and support.
“Our lives were completely uprooted in the most horrible way, left our family of five and three pets completely devastated after the loss of our entire home, all the contents and our two beloved pets,” Valerie Murray-Abraham said on Facebook. “The way our family, friends and community have rallied around us has left us with so much hope.”
A GoFundMe account was started to help the family get back on its feet. The account was set up by Isaac Abraham, her husband, who said the home is “being ruled a total loss.”
According to the GoFundMe page, he was living in the house with his wife, son, daughter, granddaughter and several pets. While one dog and two cats got out safely, unfortunately, a dog and cat were reportedly lost in the fire.
The Abraham family is staying in a hotel for the time being.
In separate Facebook posts, the couple reported they are going through the piles of donations to see what they can use. For anything that does not fit or that they cannot use, the Abraham family will “pay it forward” and donate to local churches or other families in need. Isaac Abraham specifically mentioned the recent fire that displaced residents on Maryland Circle in Whitehall.
