Bethlehem Catholic News - Hawks take flight

“It is good for us to be here,” said by one of our mathematics teachers, Ms. DeSanto.

As we begin the school year, the Golden Hawks are truly taking flight – proving why it is good for us to be here, a part of the Bethlehem Catholic community.

To kick-start the year, the football team strung up wins against East Pennsboro Aug. 23, Berks Catholic Sept. 5, Allenton Central Catholic Sept. 21, and Pocono Mountain East Sept. 27. Although the team ended the regular season with a record standing at 4-6, the team has all the more drive and hope to go back-to-back in the district playoffs.

“Last year obviously, in the regular season we lost to them pretty big, but then we came back and destroyed them in the playoffs,” said Grant Mulhern, class of 2026, about the win over rival Central Catholic, and what it means for the 4A District 11 playoffs. “But this year, we were coming in with more intent, and they still had some great competition. They had great linemen, great wide receivers and great defensive backs, but we ran all over them. On offense we passed a couple times, and our defense was amazing, putting up a zero on the board, which made us more confident in ourselves to play better in future games and in the playoffs.”

Sept. 21 was not just an important day for the football team, but also an important day for raising awareness for suicide prevention. With September being Suicide Prevention month, Becahi’s field hockey team and “The Movement” organized a game and car wash to raise money for the Suicide Prevention Center.

“It was very important to our school community since we have lost students due to suicide,” said Ms. Harris, proctor of The Movement and a mathematics teacher. “It was such a remarkable experience, having all of our student body, our Movement members, and our volunteers come together for one great cause.” The Bethlehem Catholic community was able to raise over $1,800 to go toward Suicide Prevention Awareness.

Becahi’s Homecoming Week, Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, saw an array of dress down themed days, activities in the gym and a pep rally. The Homecoming game took place Oct. 3 against Freedom HS. Senior Angelina Fekula was named queen and was met by two boys who tied for king – seniors Marco Frinzi and Michael Onorato.

The girls’ volleyball team has also seen great success this season with a record of 20-6. Despite losing to rival Central Catholic in the district playoffs Oct. 28, the team played competitively in four sets. During the EPC playoffs, the team held its opponent to five sets. These came as little wins for the young team, as Central Catholic has been able to win in four or less for most teams they faced this season.

On Oct. 20 junior and senior class members were inducted into the National Honor Society. This was also followed by the recognition of the Top 10 of each class, starting with the class of 2027. These students in both NHS and the Top 10 included a variety of student athletes and students who impact their school and community.

On Oct. 26 Becahi announced that Mekhi Britt, Remiah Rivera, and Rio Stoudt qualified for the PIAA State Championship run in Hershey.

On Oct. 27 Becahi had also announced the following Fall Senior EPC Scholar Athletes for their recognition both in the classroom and on the field: Leah Bender; Ava Burkar; Mekhi Britt; Vanna Hrousis; Sarah Gowell; Michael Onorato; and Ethan Wiles.

On Oct. 31 the Bethlehem Catholic’s football team defeated East Stroudsburg North 42-7, as it looks to continue its journey to back-to-back the District 11 championship.

As the Golden Hawks take flight again, we as a school look to continue to thrive in all aspects. Visit becahi.org for more information.
