SAUCON VALLEY NEWS By Zara Ortiz
Saucon girls fall sports have been on a roll this year. As of Oct. 25, all of the teams that qualified for districts this year were the girls teams. Field hockey, cross country, tennis and soccer have been doing incredibly well.
The field hockey team finished the season with a 7-10-2 record, ranking sixth in the district. Led by captains Morgan Krewatch, Katryna Price and Riley Lannon, the team qualified for both league and district playoffs for the first time in many years.
The team advances to the semifinals on Monday after a nail-biting game vs the Wilson Warriors. The odds were against the Panthers for this game. At halftime the Panthers were down 2-0, but the team persevered during the last half to go into sudden death overtime with a 2-2 tie. During the last second of overtime a penalty corner was called, giving the Panthers one last shot at winning. Senior Katryna Price followed in classmate Riley Lannons shot to end the corner and advance Saucon into the semi-finals.
The field hockey team hasn’t been the only team on a roll this year. I spoke to junior Virginia Kraus of the cross country team regarding this season:
“We finished fifth in the Colonial League with a record of 18-10,” she said. “We have had many standout performances from new freshman runners Angeletta Romano and Megan Kuryona, who stepped in to become scoring runners on our varsity team as freshmen. Our senior runners Ruth Sterner and Fabienne McCullagh have also been excellent contributors to our team scores, each improving their times by more than 30 seconds this year. I am looking forward to the upcoming postseason competitions in the following weeks. This season I defended my title as Colonial League champion and district champion. I’m hoping to defend my state titles as well if I am lucky enough to do so. After states, I will be competing in Footlocker’s regional cross country championships with the hope of becoming a national qualifier.”
Girls soccer has dominated this season, ranking fourth in the district (15-4 record). Trent Seibert took over the girls soccer program as coach in 2021. Since then the team has inched closer and closer to winning championships.
On Wednesday night, the Panthers won 5-1 over Northern Lehigh in district quarterfinals. Senior Ava Riehl scored two goals, breaking the school record for most goals scored in a high school career (85). Riehl is ranked #17 in Pennsylvania (according to maxpreps) and is committed to play D1 soccer at Arkansas State.
Saucon is full of phenomenal players. Junior Tesia Mikuta is ranked #6 in the state and is committed to play D1 soccer at Tennessee. Junior Elliot Policare is ranked #1 in Pennsylvania and broke the school assist record this season as well.
The girls tennis team had a fantastic season, going 9-3. I talked to senior Madilyn Schottman about districts.
“Annemarie Andres and Zoe Sauvagnargues won silver for singles, Emma Sauvagnargues won bronze for singles,” she said. “Sarah and I won silver for first doubles, and Hailey Boardman and Sarah Blair won bronze for second doubles. Sarah and I went to the second round of district doubles, where our own teammates beat us, but it’s great because they got to go to the semifinals.”
The soccer and field hockey semifinal games will be played tonight to determine who makes it to finals.
