Ballot drop-off boxes provide a safe and convenient way for voters to return their mail-in ballots. Each drop-off box is a secure, locked structure that is permanently anchored in place. Northampton County drop-off boxes have been evaluated to specifically ensure they are indoors, ADA compliant, either chained or anchored in place, under 24-hour camera/surveillance, and allow county sheriff’s deputies to collect the contents of the box on a daily basis. All Northampton County drop-off boxes are operated only by election officials and County Sheriff’s Deputies.
To ensure that your mail-in ballot is accepted, your ballot must be enclosed in the YELLOW secrecy envelope and sealed; there are NO identifying marks or symbols on the secrecy envelope, a return envelope is signed and dated on the back in the appropriate YELLOW boxes, and the ballot is returned to the Elections Office NO LATER THAN 8 p.m. on election night, Tuesday, November 5th. USPS postmarks do NOT count if received after this deadline.
The Northampton County Elections Office reminds registered voters that the County’s seven secure ballot drop-off boxes are for Northampton County voters only, and you may only drop off your own ballot. Pa. State Law prohibits the third-party return of ballots unless the person returning the ballot is assisting a disabled voter or emergency absentee voter and has a signed “Certification of Designated Agent” form on file at the Elections Office. A copy of this form can be downloaded here:
pa.gov/content/dam/copapwp-pagov/en/vote/resources/documents-and-forms/Authorize-Designated-Agent-for-Mail-in-or-Absentee-Ballot.pdf
Counterfeiting, forging, tampering with, or destroying ballots is a second-degree misdemeanor pursuant to sections 1816 and 1817 of the PA Election Code. (25 P.S. §§ 3516 and 3517)
Voters can track the status of their mail-in or absentee ballots here: www.pavoterservices.pa.gov/pages/ballottracking.aspx
On Nov. 5, the Northampton County’s 154 precincts will be fully staffed for voters who want to cast their ballot on one of the 315 ES&S ExpressVote XL machines. Turnout is expected to be high, so voters should prepare for long lines by wearing comfortable shoes. All precincts are ADA accessible but, if standing for long periods is a concern, voters may want to bring a chair.
The Northampton County Elections Office is providing a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
What time are the polls open for the General Primary Election on Nov 5?
Between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5. If you’re in line by 8 p.m., stay in line, you will be allowed to cast your vote.
What will be on the ballot?
President, U.S. Senator, Attorney General, Auditor General, State Treasurer, Congressional Rep., State Representative and referendum questions. The Elections Office recommends all voters review the ballot before voting. You can view the General Primary Election sample ballots for the Nov. 5 Election here:

Who can vote at the polls in the General Election?
Registered voters who have not already cast an Absentee or Mail-In ballot. The deadline to register to vote was Oct. 21. Voters who applied for and cast a Mail-In ballot are not eligible to vote at the polls.
How can I check to see if I’m registered to vote?
You can check your registration status at www.vote.pa.gov
Where do I vote in person?
To check your polling location, enter your address at: vote.pa.gov/pollingplace. If voters arrive at an incorrect location, each precinct will have QR Codes available to help voters find their correct polling place.
Do I need to present any identification at the polls?
The first time you vote, or are a new voter to a particular precinct, you must bring a photo, or non-photo ID. Identification is not required from people who have previously voted at their polling place.
What if I speak a different language?
Every voting machine will have ballots in both English and Spanish.
What if I have a disability which makes it difficult to vote on the machine at the polls?
The ES&S ExpressVote XL has accommodations for voters with macular degeneration or other hearing and visual impairments. Alert the poll workers if you need one of these accommodations.
What if I have a disability that makes it difficult to vote without assistance?
Registered voters who need assistance may bring someone with them to the polling place. You will be asked to complete and sign a Declaration of Need Assistance form.
I requested a mail-in ballot, but now I want to vote in person at the polls.
If you requested a mail-in ballot but now wish to vote on a machine, you must bring your Mail-In ballot and the return envelope with you to your polling location. The Judge of Election will spoil your ballot and ask the voter to complete a Declaration to Surrender Ballot form before allowing you to vote on the ExpressVote XL. Only then will the voter be permitted to vote on the machine. If you do not bring your mail-in ballot and return envelope to the polls, you may only vote by Provisional ballot. The Elections Board will verify that the voter did not vote by mail before the provisional ballot can be counted.
Have the ExpressVote XL machines been tested?
Our voting machines underwent extensive Logic & Accuracy testing in October 2024.
