Northwestern avenges loss to Jim Thorpe

With one match remaining in the 2024 regular season, the Northwestern Lehigh girls volleyball team has clinched its place in both the Colonial League and District 11 playoffs.

The Tigers (11-8 overall; 11-4 Colonial League) have won their last four matches, including a 3-2 win over Jim Thorpe last week that avenged a 3-1 loss to the Olympians early in the season and helped Northwestern’s playoff position.

The Tigers are a game and a half behind the Olympians (13-3; 10-3) for second place in the league standings and the No. 2 seed for the league playoffs. Thorpe has two matches remaining in the season as of Tuesday and is likely to win both and hold onto second place.

The Tigers beat Palmerton Monday, 3-1 Silfies led the Tigers with 12 kills and five digs, while Shannon Green added 24 assists.

Northwestern beat Lehighton 25-18, 25-14, 25-14 last Thursday with Norah Silfies posting eight kills. Shannon Green had 17 assists for the Tigers, while teammate Lexi George added 18 digs.

The match against Jim Thorpe was a nail-biter, going five sets with the Tigers battling back after dropping two of the first three sets to earn a 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-9) win.

Silfies had 17 kills and eight assists against Thorpe. Green had 40 assists and four aces in the match, while George posted 31 digs.

The Tigers defeated Notre Dame (9-8; 9-6) to secure second place in the league. The Tigers pulled out three of the four close sets for a 3-1 (28-26, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20) win.

Green assisted on 46 points in the match while also making 11 digs. Silfies had 18 kills and seven blocks, with teammate Elyse Browning adding 11 kills and two blocks.

Northwestern will end the season Saturday with a match at Pen Argyl.
