Letter to the Editor: ‘Do we want to live our lives under a dictator?’

‘Do we want to live our lives under a dictator?’

To the Editor:

Last night I went to Civic Theatre of Allentown to enjoy “The Sound Of Music.”

When the movie appeared in the theaters in 1965, our whole family went to see it. After that, my mother, Jean Stoneback, would play the musical selections as we all gathered around the piano and sang.

The performance was superb and I sang along as it took me back to the days just prior to my enlistment in the Air Force. Things were simpler then and the story could be viewed as a fight between good and evil. The people of Austria were going about their lives until Hitler and his Nazis decided to control everyone’s life.

The election in November is really a fight between good and evil. Do we want to continue living in a country where we all share the rights that are guaranteed in the Constitution or do we want to live our lives under a dictator? For Captain Von Trapp and their family, they chose the hard but necessary path of freedom. They wanted a life where people were respected and shared the same values, irrespective of their country of origin or beliefs.

The unhinged Republican candidate for president wants to embolden his rich friends and control our lives. He is even willing to use the U.S. military in pursuit of his desire for power. And at the same time, he insults them and had his daddy pay off a podiatrist to remove him from serving during the Vietnam War.

The “Sound of Music” could also be called The Sound Of Freedom. May we all recognize the threat to our democracy and vote to protect it.
