Hornets rout Dieruff, 54-0

The Emmaus High School football team had one of its most complete games of the 2024 season last weekend as the offense accumulated a season-high in points and the defense earned its first shutout of the season with a 54-0 victory over Dieruff last Friday night in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Western Division game at J. Birney Crum Stadium.

The Green Hornets (6-2 overall, 4-1 EPC) scored 48 points in the first half, including 27 in the opening quarter. It was the third win in a row for Emmaus and sixth in the last seven games. The Hornets’ only two defeats came by one score in overtime.

Reilly Bechtel and Jerek Cooper both had good nights to lead the offense, each accounting for two touchdowns. Bechtel recorded the first and last of four touchdowns in the first quarter, one coming from 19 yards away and the other from 43 yards out.

Cooper connected with Cole Moreau for a 60-yard score in the first quarter and then found Kai Jefferson-Rushing for a 22-yard touchdown to open the second quarter.

Zach Stevens tallied the first of two defensive interceptions that were run back for touchdowns by the Hornets defense. His came early on in the first quarter to push the Emmaus lead to 13-0. Robert Edwards also had a pick-six of 42 yards that gave his team a 48-0 advantage. Brody McHugh added a third interception for his team.

Neo Michel found pay dirt from 20 yards out in the middle of the second quarter and Anthony Attar rounded out the scoring for the Hornets with a 43-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Bechtel finished with 102 yards on the ground and two scores. Michel had 57 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Attar contributed 46 yards and a score. Cooper threw for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while running for 45 yards. Defensively, McHugh ha a team-best five tackles, two for loss and an interception.

Emmaus will head right back to J. Birney Crum Stadium for another game this Friday night against Allen.
