Field hockey earns top seed for leagues
Once again, the Emmaus High School field hockey team finished at the top of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference regular season. The Green Hornets (18-1 overall, 13-0 EPC) ended the year unbeaten in conference play and earned the number one seed in the EPC playoffs, which began over the weekend.
Emmaus concluded the regular season with a 6-0 shutout victory over rival Parkland last Tuesday, Oct. 8. The game was close up until the third quarter as Emmaus scored the first goal in the second quarter and held a 1-0 lead at halftime
Emmaus netted five goals in the third quarter to take control.
Emmy Horner paced the offense with a hat trick and added two assists for a five-point game. Avery Burnett, Gracie Huffer and Sadie Nawarynski all recorded a goal, with Burnett and Nawarynski adding an assist each. Morgann Orobono and Autum Kernechel both contributed an assist. Aiko Price finished with one save in cage for the Green Hornets to earn the win.
Emmaus then took down Liberty, the eighth seed, in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament, 11-0, this past Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.
Marissa Gigliotti finished with a team-high three goals to lead the way. Nawarynski, Horner and Kernechel tallied two goals. Madi Lenig and Huffer found the back of the net once to round out the scoring. Nawarysnki contributed three assists. Kernechel added two assists, while Huffer, Burnett, Horner and Orobono all had one assist.
Price did not record a save as Emmaus outshot the Hurricanes 52-0 and held a 19-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Emmaus played the four seed, Parkland, in the semifinal round last night. The winner will take on the winner of the other semifinal between Easton and Nazareth in the championship game on Thursday night.
