Falcons battle for postseason seeding

The Salisbury High School field hockey team has secured a spot in both the Colonial League and District 11 playoffs. But the Falcons’ hopes for a higher seeding in both tournaments will come down to the final game of the season.

This year’s season finale is against division rival Southern Lehigh (12-2-0, 13-3-0) and will figure prominently in determining both the South Division winner in the league and potentially the top seed in districts.

The two teams played early in the season with Salisbury falling to the Lady Spartans 1-0 in Center Valley.

Before the upcoming meeting between the two teams, Southern Lehigh will face another division rival in Saucon Valley (5-7-1, 6-9-1). Should the Spartans win that game, they would hold a one-game edge against the Falcons (12-1-0 Colonial, 15-2-0 overall) in overall Colonial League record, which is the first tiebreaker for seeding.

That lead would be erased with a Salisbury win over Southern Lehigh. The second tiebreaker, which is head-to-head record, wouldn’t settle the dispute. The teams are also tied in their division records at 7-1 and have identical records against other teams that qualified for the league tournament, which are the third and fourth tiebreakers. The fifth tiebreaker is record against teams in the league that have at least a .500 record and that too would be tied.

At that point, they call in the math teachers to figure out the two teams power rankings against league opponents and if that is tied, they then figure the power rankings in District 11.

Coming into the final week of the season, Salisbury has a slight edge over Southern Lehigh in district power rankings by a margin of just .002, but a Salisbury win in the finale would likely give them the edge and the division crown.

If Southern Lehigh wins the finale, then they get the division title.

With both teams being 2A schools for districts, if either were to win the Colonial League championship, it would receive the top seed in districts.

This past week, Salisbury continued to roll with shutout wins over Saucon Valley and Palisades. (1-12-1, 2-13-1).

The Lady Falcons beat the Panthers 4-0 behind goals from Maya Afif, Gwyn DeFazio, Lauren Kushma, and Kendra Morgan. Palisades fell to Salisbury 8-0 to give the Falcons their eighth straight win and ninth shutout win of the season.
