BC falls in finals; Liberty gets top seed

Is this the year for Liberty’s volleyball team to come away as district champions? The Hurricanes (15-3) might be set up just for that, as they enter the District 11 4A tournament as the top-seed.

Liberty opens up play in Thursday’s quarterfinals against the winner of the eight-nine matchup between Stroudsburg and Pocono Mountain East. A potential semifinal scenario will pit the Hurricanes against either Nazareth (fourth seed) or Pleasant Valley (fifth seed).

The bottom bracket pits third-seed Emmaus against sixth-seeded Northampton and second-seeded Parkland against seventh-seeded Easton.

Liberty’s only three losses this year have to Central Catholic and twice to Bethlehem Catholic, including in the EPC semifinals.

Semifinals are set for Oct. 29 and finals are Oct. 31 with both dates at Catasauqua.

Becahi (17-3) got the short end of the stick in seeding in the 3A bracket, dropping down to the fourth seed this week because Central Catholic, Pottsville and Southern Lehigh all earned the top seeds after winning their league titles.

The Hawks will now likely have to face Central Catholic in the semifinals, assuming both teams get past their quarterfinal showdowns. The Vikings, the top seed, get the winner of Blue Mountain (eighth seed) and Northwestern (ninth seed) and Becahi faces fifth-seeded Panther Valley in the opener.

Central has beaten Becahi twice this season, the latest coming in last week’s EPC championship where the Vikings outlasted the Hawks in five games.

The other side of the bracket features a three-six showdown between Pottsville and Jim Thorpe, while second-seeded Solehi awaits the winner of Lehighton (seventh seed) and Notre Dame GP (tenth seed).

Semifinals are Oct. 28 and finals will be on Oct. 31 with both again at Catasauqua.
