Library celebrates 100th anniversary
On a picture perfect day, the Public Library of Catasauqua Board of Directors, staff, well-wishers and patrons celebrated the 100th anniversary of the library Oct. 12.
In honor of the celebration, the library hosted a block party. A steady stream of attendees came to enjoy the celebration that included dignitaries and a robust program of events.
State Rep. Jeanne McNeill, D-133rd, kicked off the event by providing a certificate of success and recognition to the library. Catasauqua Mayor Barbara Schlegel provided a tribute to Katherine Grey, a dedicated library official who unexpectedly died in March. Schlegel posthumously honored Grey’s work serving the library.
A puppet show was held in the library’s social hall. The Yippee Show Puppets, based in Coopersburg, presented the “Rumpeldillskin” Puppet Show. Visit yippeeshowpuppets.com for information on how to book the show at your next kids’ party.
Wildlands Conservancy treated attendees to a meet-and-greet with a miniature screech owl named Bertrum, who was badly injured after being hit by a car about 10 years ago, leaving him partially blind. Visit wildlandspa.org for information.
There were a number of book readings held for kids, as well as crafts, sidewalk arts and games. A big hit for the youngsters was when Bruce the Bear showed up for photo ops for kids and adults. A volunteer team from St. Mary’s Catholic Church staffed a food table serving barbecue and light refreshments. Pizza was also offered at another table.
Mitchell Hendricks entertained throughout the afternoon with a wide variety of popular music. Visit Hendricks’ Facebook page to learn more about his music and how to book him for your next event.
Jenny Delgado and her daughter Ella Williams, of Catasauqua, were delighted to sign up for their new library cards. Ella near immediately scarfed up a book about birds to loan from the library.
George Hillenbrand, the library board president, joined Vice President Mollie Laubach-Haydt and other board members circulating at the event. They were very happy about the successful celebration and the hopes of generating more members for the library.
Day-to-day library operations leaders Amy Feidler and Director Brad Rogers were grateful for the entire team of staff, board members and volunteers who assembled and executed a fun, informative event for children and their families.
The library’s location at 302 Bridge St. was once a church and was renovated for its new purpose as a library.
