STUDENT PROFILE
Grade: 12th
Family members: Hanming (brother), Ying (mom), Zhiyuan (dad)
Favorite subject(s): Math! This year, I am auditing Numerical Analysis at school and also taking Symbolic Logic at Lehigh University. It can be both creative and logical, which I find incredibly fascinating.
Activities: I sing in Chorale, Camerata and Coda Red, and I was a soprano in the winter musical. I am member of the varsity cross-country team and run track in the winter and springtime. I raised over $4,500 as my class’ financial officer and planned multiple events through student council. Outside of MA, I teach, tutor, and I am an intern at the Brain Imaging and Computation Lab at Lehigh University.
Next steps: College! I hope to go to graduate school as well.
Career goals: I want to become a professor. I would be able to experiment and conduct research (which I love) while shaping the next generation of thinkers and students. It would be amazing!
Heroes: My parents, I think. As I get older, I understand more what it must have been like for them to move to the US and make a life somewhere completely new. I realize how much work it takes to create a place for yourself, and become as brilliant, accomplished and interesting as they are! Thanks, guys.
Hobbies: I like running, walking, writing, singing and making playlists. I love trying out new recipes but also like to make the same loaf of crusty French bread a million times. I find peace gardening or taking care of my houseplants. I also like going out to restaurants, eating good food, and leaving reviews on Beli!
Current job(s): I have recently opted into becoming a paid teacher at the Huaxia Chinese School! I teach two classes and I love all of my students.
Volunteer/community work: I organize tutoring for students in the area!
Likes: Orchids, matcha AND chai lattes, working in a lab, grading homework, doing math, and singing a cappellala.
Dislikes: Hot coffee, passive-aggressive people, low-income students’ lack of access to educational resources, and wet socks.
Greatest accomplishment (so far): Becoming a National Gold Medalist for my poetry in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
Advice for peers: Learn how to admire yourself! Create a healthy perception of yourself, and it will ground you through rejection or struggles. Recognize yourself as amazing and it will motivate you to put forward your most genuine effort each and every time.
