Ruane expects to have big role next season for Pates

Gianna Ruane remembers when she was first heard about golf, and it wasn’t a pleasant feeling.

“My grandfather introduced me to golf in 2017,” recalled Ruane. “But at that time, I wasn’t interested.

“But I went back to the game in 2021, and I stuck with it.”

This past season, the Freedom sophomore played in the East Penn Conference (EPC) and the District 11 qualifier tournament. After Ruane had a 109 in the EPC tournament. she just missed the district qualifier shooting a 116.

Since her return to the game, Ruane has continued to work to improve her game. It is a work in progress for the budding golfer.

“Ever since I started playing again, my stance has been great, but I had to work on my arm positions,” said Ruane. “I have worked on it since it is different for every club.”

Head coach Mike Evans is optimistic about Ruane’s future. Ruane is expected to play a major role next season.

“As a sophomore, Gianna saw limited time in matches, as the team was largely made up of seniors,” he said. “Next year, Gianna is projected to be a key player among those whose scores will be used often.

“She had a good EPC and district qualifier, and she nearly advanced to the district tournament.”

Evans also likes her mental approach to the game, and the anticipated play in her overall game.

“Gianna has a great temperament for golf,” added Evans. “She has a short memory that allowed her to focus one hole at a time. She has a strong game off the tee, and when he short game catches up, her average will drop several strokes.”

Ruane also likes her future possibilities.

“I think where I am in my game now is good, and since I’m a sophomore, I’m hoping it will get better,” said Ruane. “Midseason this year was the best part of my game while postseason wasn’t the best. But that shows me what I need to work on and pushes me to work harder.”

Ruane thanked Evans and Whitehall Golf Course pro Brad Paukovits for their help, as the duo always knew how to help.

This summer, Ruane will keep her pace.

“This summer, I plan on getting the precision and accuracy of my clubs right,” said Ruane. “I am also going to different courses to know the layouts.”

For Ruane, it can only get better.
