Kids Liv Jusinski medals at EPC meet
Northampton junior harrier Liv Jusinski medaled with an 11th place finish at the Eastern Pennsylvania Cross Country Championships on Oct. 15 at DeSales University.
“I wish I would have done better, but I’m not disappointed in my race,” said Jusinski after the girls meet, uncertain as to whether she’d medaled.
A mix-up in the medal count caused the uncertainty for both Jusinski and Northampton coach Dan Benner when only 10 medals sat on the awards table instead of the usual 12. It was then noted by Allentown Central Catholic’s assistant athletic director that two medals were missing.
“She ran a hard first mile,” Coach Benner said. “Second mile, her legs were probably a little tired. We worked pretty hard last week, so a chance to recover a little bit and I think she’ll be fine for next week.”
Jusinski ran between 10th and 14th place for most of the 5k and crossed the finish line with a time of 20:43.9.
“Last year, the starts were her weakness, and she had a better start today, so I was happy to see that,” Benner said.
After getting somewhat boxed-in at the start, Jusinski made up for some lost seconds.
“I got pushed toward the back more, but I was able to catch up a bit on the back stretch,” she said. “The weather helped me. Being cooler made the race a lot more bearable. I passed a few girls, they passed me, and the place changed a lot. (Strategy was) to push the hills as much as I could and try to use that momentum in the third mile.”
Also from Northampton, Olivia Kuhns was 55th in 23:34.7, Aurora Greene was 70th in 24:57.2, Jocelyn Perl was 77th in 25:36.4, Juliana Joseph was 78th in 25:37.2, and Grace Schall was 96th in 29:02.1.
In the boys meet, Edwin Wright placed 50th with a time of 18:49.3, and Abel Veltri was 67th in 19:37.9
Emmaus’s Madelyn McCartney won the girls race with a time of 18:52.6, and Freedom’s Dylan Boyle won the boys race with a time of 16:32.2.
The District XI Class 3A Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Oct. 23 at DeSales University.
“I’ll definitely try to hold my momentum longer and open my stride more,” Jusinski said.
